Bats were blistered on Wednesday, but Grass Lake Warriors Varsity couldn’t quite get the job done against Vandercook Lake and lost 17-7.

The Grass Lake Warriors Varsity struggled to put runs on the board and had a tough time defensively containing Vandercook Lake, giving up 17 runs.

Grass Lake Warriors Varsity opened up an early lead in the first inning when Chance Macomber singled on a 0-1 count, scoring two runs.

After Vandercook Lake scored four runs in the top of the second, Grass Lake Warriors Varsity answered with four of their own. Vandercook Lake scored when Danielle Cheney singled on a 1-2 count, scoring two runs, Kate Leach drew a walk, scoring one run, and Olivia Applegate drew a walk, scoring one run. Grass Lake Warriors Varsity then answered when Anna Lockridge doubled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring two runs, Dana Peterson’s sac fly scored one run for Grass Lake Warriors Varsity, and Megan Niehaus grounded out, scoring one run.

Vandercook Lake took the lead for good with nine runs in the third inning. In the third Kaely Howard doubled on a 1-1 count, scoring two runs, Mackenzie Johnson was hit by a pitch, driving in a run, Kaysey Cook induced Applegate to hit into a fielder’s choice, but one run scored, Abby Riddle drew a walk, scoring one run, Erika Cheney singled on a 0-2 count, scoring two runs, and Howard tripled on a 1-0 count, scoring two runs.

Maddie Smith earned the victory in the pitcher’s circle for Vandercook Lake. She allowed six hits and seven runs over five innings, striking out two.

Cook took the loss for Grass Lake Warriors Varsity. She surrendered eight runs on six hits over two and two-thirds innings, striking out two.

Grass Lake Warriors Varsity racked up six hits in the game. Lockridge and Alyiah Davidson all had multiple hits for Grass Lake Warriors Varsity. Davidson and Lockridge all had two hits to lead Grass Lake Warriors Varsity.

Vandercook Lake saw the ball well today, racking up 14 hits in the game. Howard, Leach, Cheney, and Cheney all managed multiple hits for Vandercook Lake.
